Periodontitis is an infectious disease of the periodontium that is caused by specific bacteria. The type of bacterial association characterises the severity of periodontitis. iai PadoTest is used to determine the presence and association of periodontopathogenic bacteria and classify them into five degrees of severity of periodontitis (types 1 to 5) that were determined statistically.
This classification into types allows therapists to initiate targeted treatment very easily and efficiently. iai PadoTest provides information on treatment options and, if necessary, on necessary antibiotics.

- Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa)
- Filifactor alocis (Fa)
- Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg)
- Prevotella intermedia (Pi)
- Tannerella forsythia (Tf)
- Treponema denticola (Td)
iai PadoTest uses a special Multiplex Realtime PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) for detection and quantification of the bacteria. The unsurpassed accuracy of this form of analysis provides an accurate picture of the bacterial status in the periodontal pocket. Our own investigations have shown that the detection of bacteria already dead is negligible, since the metabolism in the periodontal pocket is subject to a certain turn-over rate. Real-time PCR and probe-based RNA hybridisation were correlated with each other and the PCR results were confirmed using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Of course, all results from the RNA hybridisation remain valid and along with the correlation enable a seamless transition to real-time PCR as an examination method.
